REFLECTIONS - JOURNAL ENTRIES
WEEK 3 - WEEK 4
These 2 weeks I was finally assigned to a team for short term to work on a proposal that would be due on the 2nd of February in Sabah which means we had to finish it up by the 30th and send it over. I finally had the first meeting of my internship this year where we discussed on what this proposal was about and who was in-charged of which part of the proposal. It was something new to me as I have not worked on any proposals before. My role in this proposal was just to help out the other 4 members of the team as I do not have any experience in doing proposal and there was not much part that requires input from my field of study.
Firstly, I did some research on the project details and examples of similar cases that was done in Malaysia other than Sabah. Then I collected statistics for Sabah and plotted some graphs and pie charts.
This is an example of the graphs and pie charts I did, where the title and legends were taken of due to the privacy issue.
Other than making graphs, I also helped the team in filling up the CV (Curriculum Vitae) of the team members and some credentials related to the project.
As I read through the final proposal, seeing part of my work there, I was really satisfied as I felt like I contributed to the proposal. Doing this proposal, I encountered a few things I’ve never knew before this and learnt so much from this proposal even though my contribution was just a small part of it. I learnt about to really manage, organize, supervise and distribute work by observing how the proposal manager organize the work flow of doing the proposal. In addition to that, I’ve learnt a lot of research techniques as I’ve been doing research 70% of my time working here for the past 4 weeks. I’ve learnt how to construct and make use of proper key word in doing research.
Other than that, I’ve gained so much knowledge about tax and the different types of taxes that are charged. Prior to starting this internship, I thought I would be involved in GST projects which is one of the hottest tax topic in Malaysia as it would be implementing most probably in April this year. However, they had placed me under the non GST related part of the department which I later on found out it was actually a good news. Not just because I can approach more variety of project and types of work but also because I get to stay in office most of the time and be closer with the other associates as compared to the GST teams, they are placed at different client’s place most of the time and they are only close to their teammates.
Although I did not get to learn about GST which I actually wanted to, I got in touch with other types of taxes such as cess, corporate tax, tax incentives (how, why, when and where incentives are given to corporations) and etc. These are pretty new to me as some of the research I did were so uncommon and were topics that I have not encountered before in university in which I can now make use of my extra knowledge in my coming assignments if applicable. Whereas GST is a topic I knew and I could just do research on it anytime.
Note to self: In a team, it is important to put in effort in every thing we do no matter how small the task is because every little effort will contributes to something great to the team
